Applications
Technology
Remote supervision of plant and property can be performed by making use of the public telephone system, basically there are two alternatives.
Fixed Land Lines Mobile Phone System
The advantages of using the Land Line is
Widely Available Cheap To Run
However this is coupled with significant disadvantages
May require special installation of telephone connection, this may not be possible in remote locations Low level of security - open to eavesdropping Transmission of data very slow Upgrade paths limited
The mobile phone system on the other hand offers numerous advantages
International Coverage Various data transmission methods available No on site installation required - plug in and go Future proof - offers many upgrade opportunities High level of security inherent in the system
On balance the mobile phone system offers the greatest flexibility and growth opportunities.
The mobile phone network provides various methods of data transmission
SMS ( Short Message Service - Texting) - good for small amounts of data Circuit Switched Data - good for medium amounts data Packet Data - good for large amounts of data
For many applications SMS is a suitable choice
There are many occasions when it is necessary to provide access to a building or location to a trusted third party, say to investigate an alarm or to allow an out of hours delivery. The Virtual Keyholder allows for this eventuality in a safe and secure way. Working on the basis of a shared secret, the unit uses mobile phone technology to grant access once only, on a timed entry to a location. To be given entry privileges, the caller is given a unique code number together with a time window in which the code will be valid. The person granting access sends the same information to the Virtual Keyholder unit installed in the premises by sending a mobile phone SMS message. Upon arrival at the location the caller enters the code they have previously been given onto a keypad connected to the unit. If the code entered agrees with the code held by the Virtual Keyholder and it is within the specified time frame access is granted. The code works for that one entry only.
The unit works in conjunction with normal electric lock units and eliminates the need for duplicate keys that run the risk of being copied of lost.

A company manufacturing a medical diagnostic instrument were interested in gathering patient test results from units in various locations as part of a clinical trails programme. The instrument itself included a serial port that was used to output formatted test results to a printer. Quansys designed and supplied a unit that plugged directly into the printer port that accepted the formatted data and dispatched the results as an SMS message to either a central computer where the results could be logged and analysed or directly to a mobile phone so that the results could be viewed by a practitioner on the move.
The solution did not require any changes to be made to instrument itself and offered the client a plug in and go operation.
The system is now being extended so that automatic re-ordering of instrument
consumerables can be included.
A construction site where a number of temporary buildings had been erected required an onsite security system to be operational as quickly as possible. In addition there was also a requirement that access could be granted to certain people but only at certain times. By interfacing standard alarm sensors to a Quansys GSM modem any alarm alerts are sent as SMS messages to the site manager. In order to grant access when required the site manager could simply send a command text message back to the site modem which would operate a standard electric lock to open any particular on site facility.
All set up and command operations are performed remotely
so that there is no need to visit the on site units.
Geofencing ultises the satellite Global Positioning
System (GPS) by detecting when an object moves from a known position. This
technology is useful for protecting high value assets such as boats or caravans.
This together with a GSM modem provides a powerful security system. In the
event of an alarm being raised, either by an intrusion and by the object being
moved from its parked position an SMS message can be sent to one or more mobile
phones to so that remedial action can be taken. In the event of the object
being moved and the geofence boundary being broken the system will continue
to transmit location information so that the object can be traced and eventually
intercepted.

Working on the basis of a shared secret the unit uses mobile phone technology to grant access during a specified time window. The CM24/7 includes a high level of local intelligence that allows high/low levels to be remotely set for each of the analog inputs as well as time of day permissions for both the analog and digital inputs. In the event of an alarm being triggered an SMS message is sent to a specified mobile phone. The phone list feature allows specific alarms to be directed to different mobile phone so the alarm can be quickly directed to the most relevant person. In addition phones groups can be set up so that alarm messages are sent to members of that group until a action acknowledgement is received back at the CM24/7.
The CM24/7 can be supplied either as a stand alone module for use in a wide range of equipment monitoring and control applications or as an OEM unit built into equipment such as vending machines and unattended machinery.
Features:
The monitoring features of the unit allow for a number
of alarm and sensors to be supervised. Alert signals can be sent using either
SMS messages to any specified phone or by data services to a control centre.
